Dropping In

We’re back! Aloha and welcome to sUrfari, the Journal of New England Surfing. I kind of fell off the webmaster wagon November through mid February…didn’t really surf that much either during that time, but now I’m surfing up a storm!

I didn’t just name my website sUrfari because I like to travel around New England surfing but because an essential part of the experience of a New England surfer is going off somewhere else to find their own perfect wave. Some like to escape the flat crowded summers which is always a good bet, but I think the winter is the right time to go on sUrfari for more then a few reasons.

-It’s too bloody cold to surf these damn New England winters! Every year as I get older, I find my once super-human level of resistance to cold getting lower and lower. Even here in Hawaii I have to throw on a vest to ward off the early morning tradewind chill every once in a while.

-Like a good friend of mine was fond of saying, You can buy a winter suit and all the accesories or you can buy a ticket somewhere warm and stay there a while. Uh, like two months in the Islands Beavis?

-IMing with another friend back in NE the other day, we both came to the same conclusion…

warm and crowded over cold and empty. Surfing was made for trunks not six mils silly! Plus with all that freedom it’s easier to share waves with all your new surf buddies.

-Besides, winter has always been the time to escape from the cold, the flat spells, and everything else that rhymes with cold and misery, especially for the hardened New England surfer. But don’t think for one minute that after a day of surfing perfect tropical reef waves that I don’t check the surf report back home in New England to see if I missed something…something special.
